Are you looking to spend your Maui vacation in an intimate and upscale setting away from the oversized accommodations in the overcrowded resort areas? Then this overview of Maui boutique hotels and resorts is for you.
Most Maui travelers prefer to stay in one of the hotels and resorts that line the popular beaches of West Maui and South Maui. While these accommodations certainly offer value in terms of location and facilities, they also lack personalized service and a sense of tranquility. That’s exactly what a boutique experience is about.
I hand-picked what I believe are the top boutique hotels in Maui. The result is a list of stylish and serene resorts for all budgets.
So, are you ready to discover the best boutique accommodations in Maui? Then let’s dive in!

What’s the difference between a boutique hotel and a luxury hotel?
Boutique hotels are small-scale, low-rise, independent places to stay. As a general rule of thumb, a boutique property has less than a hundred rooms. They are tucked away from the crowds while still being well-connected.
In terms of luxury, the difference between a boutique property and a 5-star hotel is that the luxury aspect applies as much to the service as it does to the accommodations.
Boutique properties feature upscale rooms with a touch of local culture, an array of amenities, and a highly personalized guest experience. The hospitable staff goes above and beyond to make guests feel at home.
What sets a Maui boutique hotel apart from an upscale Maui bed and breakfast, like Ho’oilo House and Noah’s Hideaway, is the size of the property.
My selection of boutique hotels in Maui
For every Maui boutique resort in this list, I have added all the essential details you need. This includes the location, the number of rooms, and extra fees (if any). All listings have been hand-picked and feature a unique boutique-style feel, whether it’s due to their private setting, their exquisite service, or both.
Every property in this list links out to the corresponding listing on Booking.com or VRBO. Simply read through the details, check the reviews, and set your preferred dates to get an exact breakdown of the costs. If you still like what you see, you can go ahead and make your online booking.
I would have loved to include The Plantation Inn in Lahaina, but much to all former guests’ regret, this amazing property didn’t survive the wildfires.
Now, without further ado, here’s my personal selection of the best boutique hotels in Maui Hawaii.
Psst… At the end of this article, you’ll find a map showing the location of all listings.
1. Hotel Wailea Maui
Couples looking for a romantic boutique hotel will love Hotel Wailea, part of the Relais & Châteaux collection. It offers adults-only accommodations in an intimate tropical setting. The suites are equipped with deep soaking tubs and feature original artwork.
Nestled on the slopes of the Haleakala, Hotel Wailea is tucked away from the Wailea action yet close to the glamorous beaches, upscale boutiques, and fine-dining restaurants of Wailea.
A complimentary luxury transfer to the beach is available any time of day. That is if you can peel yourself off the comfortable loungers in one of the cabanas that line the pool.
Other hotel highlights are the yoga sessions by the waterfall, mixology classes, and the opportunity to enjoy a private 7-course dinner in the enchanting Treehouse at Wailea restaurant.
2. Historic Wailuku Inn
This enchanting charming plantation-style accommodation was originally built over a century ago and lovingly restored to its former glory. Each cozy guest suite features one bedroom and one bathroom accommodating up to two guests.
All rooms have been recently updated with a modern and elegant design while retaining their unique, historical charm. You’ll appreciate the high ceilings adorned with crown moldings and antique furnishings that pay tribute to the past.
This peaceful oasis in the heart of the historic center of the island capital boasts a beautifully landscaped garden filled with fragrant flowers and swaying palms. Iao Valley State Monument can be found just around the corner – note that reservations are required to enter this park – and all other Maui landmarks and attractions are within easy reach.
Experience the Historic Wailuku Inn’s inviting ambiance and personal touch where the aloha spirit has reigned for over a century.
3. Paia Inn
The delightful Paia Inn was established in 1927. This historic North Shore boutique hotel boasts a spectacular beachfront setting.
All guest rooms, from the cozy double rooms to the exquisite suites and even the luxurious beach house, have their own open-air entry and exclusive access to Paia Bay beach. Indulge in the Hawaiian-Japanese flavors of the onsite Vana Paia restaurant or head into Paia town for more mouth-watering restaurant options.
This charming boutique inn is located in the heart of this surfer town, just across from the Paia Fish Market. Guests can rent a bike to explore the wider region.
Thanks to Paia Inn’s central location, you have easy access to some of the island’s top attractions such as Iao Valley State Park, the West Maui mountains, Haleakala National Park, and the renowned Road to Hana.
4. Hana-Maui Resort
If you’re looking to experience Maui beyond the beach hotels and resorts, then Hana is a wonderful place to stay. There’s only one hotel and that’s the Hana-Maui Resort.
It comprises a collection of suites, bungalows, cottages, and suites amidst a landscape of lush gardens and perched on the wild and wonderful wind-swept coast of Hana town. The focal point is the palm-fringed outdoor pool that overlooks the ocean.
This fabulous oceanfront boutique hotel is the perfect jumping-off point to explore the direct vicinity. Swim in waterfalls, explore botanical gardens, discover lava tubes, hike through the jungle forest, and relax on colorful beaches.
Just keep in mind that the beauty of the east coast is brought to life by the regular rainfall. So, embrace the occasional light drizzle or heavy downpour as they’re a quintessential part of Hana’s charm.
5. Napili Surf Beach Resort
At the southernmost tip of the idyllic Napili Bay Beach lies one of the friendliest boutique beachfront properties. The Napili Surf Beach Resort offers a home away from home in a collection of studios and one-bedroom condos. The accommodations are spread over four buildings, three of which offer ocean views.
All individually owned units feature a fully-equipped kitchen, and a private lanai but the decor and configuration vary. There’s no central air conditioning, only a portable air conditioner in the living area, and a ceiling fan in the bedroom.
The tropical beachfront garden is truly delightful. It features a solar-heated swimming pool and offers direct access to the soft sands of Napili Bay. There’s a second pool near the Puamala building. Two of Napili’s best-known restaurants, The Gazebo and Seahouse Restaurant, are located on either side of the bay.
Many staff members are long-term employees and there’s a true sense of family within this eco-friendly boutique resort. Yoga classes are organized three times a week and there’s a delicious weekly island-style breakfast. Biweekly workshops on ocean life and monthly Hawaiian live music complete the list of activities.
6. The Inn at Mama’s Fish House
Mama’s Fish House is the most iconic seafood restaurant on the Valley Isle. The gorgeous beachfront coconut grove at Kuau Cove is the most wonderful place to spend some time. But why settle for an evening of indulgence if you can make this your travel base?
The Polynesian-styled cottages and suites of the Inn at Mama’s feel cozy and inviting. Each has its individual style, layout, and Hawaiian artwork.
All units feature a fully equipped kitchen and come with air conditioning and daily maid service. Personal touches include fresh flowers upon arrival and a tray of fresh fruit and banana bread in the morning.
Check out the tide pools in the cove or watch the surfers at work at neighboring Hookipa Beach. The galleries, cafes, and shops of Paia town are just a short drive away.
7. Montage Kapalua Bay Maui Boutique Hotel
Next on our list of boutique accommodations in Maui is the Montage Kapalua Bay. Its serene setting and excellent service make it one of the most beloved luxury hotels on the island.
Some residences overlook the tropical garden while others boast spectacular ocean views. Their spacious layout includes a gourmet kitchen, a separate living and dining area, one or more marble bathrooms, luxurious bedrooms, and a spacious private lanai.
The resort grounds offer spectacular ocean vistas. Scenic Kapalua Bay Beach may be a short walk away, but the three wonderful swimming pools, two of which are adults-only, are equally refreshing. There’s also an array of activities to enjoy in the wider area.
Note that the weather in Kapalua tends to be rainier compared to the resort areas further south, especially in winter. Then again, you may be treated to a beautiful rainbow.
8. Sugar Cove Maui Boutique Resort
Sugar Cove is an upscale gated resort that comprises only eighteen spacious townhouses amidst a beautifully manicured oceanfront garden. Thanks to its small size, it offers the most private experience of all properties in this list of Maui boutique hotels. To add its exclusivity, only three homes are available for short-term rentals: 4B, where this listing links to, 5A, and 5C.
The grass really is greener at this wonderful oceanfront retreat. There’s an onsite tennis and pickle-ball court, a swimming pool and launch access for boogie boarding, paddle boarding, windsurfing, and kiting. A more relaxing and family-friendly beach experience can be found at Baby Beach, just a five-minute walk away.
This gorgeous three-bedroom townhome sleeps up to six guests. There are also three bathrooms and two separate living areas for added privacy. The kitchen makes for a wonderful gathering space. The views from the lanai are nothing short of spectacular.
The central location of this North Shore Maui boutique resort makes it the perfect jumping-off point to explore the island.
9. Villas by the Cove
This complex houses a collection of nine contemporary mid-century Hawaiian bungalows, two sleek penthouses, and one beautiful renovated plantation home.
The villas are arranged around the outdoor swimming pool in the resort’s well-maintained tropical garden with mango and palm trees. One is a two-bedroom dwelling while the other units feature one bedroom and a full-size sofa bed. All accommodate up to four people. The three-bedroom penthouses and the three-bedroom plantation home are situated on the lot right next to the villas, steps from the pool area.
This gorgeous boutique resort is just across the street from Cove Beach Park and Charley Young Beach. The beginner waves make this an excellent spot for that first surfing lesson. Plenty of beach gear is provided.
Nearby Kalama Park offers basketball courts, tennis courts, a skating rink, and a large playground. Plenty of local shops, grocery stores, and restaurants can be found just around the corner.
10. Kahana Sunset
The Kahana Sunset is one of the most affordable boutique hotels in Maui. It’s situated at a delightfully scenic bay about halfway between the upscale villas of Kapalua and the family resorts of Kaanapali.
This boutique condo resort comprises one and two-bedroom condos, all boasting garden and ocean views, spread over six low-rise buildings. Its sprawling garden, inviting heated pool, and laid-back atmosphere make this resort a fabulous place for a vacation, whether you make it a family trip or a couples getaway.
The size of the soft sandy beach in front of the Kahana Sunset varies throughout the seasons. Keoni Nui Bay is one of Maui’s best-kept secrets. Swim with turtles, discover the other marine life, go paddle boarding, or watch the whales breach from the shore.
Eateries, grocery stores, and shops can be found just across the road at the Napili Plaza. More restaurants can be found just north in Napili Bay and fine dining options galore in Kapalua.
There’s a little caveat: Building F, which is the most oceanfront building, is out of use since it has suffered from erosion and the impact of the pounding waves. Since the resort doesn’t operate at full capacity, it feels even more intimate. The other front-row structure, Building A, is also more exposed to the ocean but is still operational.
11. Aloha Villas
One of the smallest-scale boutique accommodations in this list is the beachfront Aloha Villas complex. It comprises no more than four private beach homes.
The first to homes are beachfront dwellings, one on the ground floor and one right above, while the other two are two-story townhomes. Each home features two master bedrooms and one guest bedroom, all with their ensuite bathroom. The kitchen is fully-stocked and an array of beach supplies is provided. All are equipped with air conditioning and motorized shades for your comfort. The private lanais are the perfect place to watch the sunset.
In an intimate corner of the resort, you’ll find a shared saltwater pool with loungers as well as a grill. The protected waters of Lipoa Street Beach and Uluniu Beach Reserve are just steps away and the shops and restaurants of Azeka Plaza are within easy reach.
The host is known for his above-and-beyond service, so much so that guests are invited to complete an interest survey before arrival so that every need can be anticipated.
12. Alaeloa Maui
Alaeloa is one of the most tranquil boutique resorts in West Maui. This hidden gem is situated along a rocky stretch of coastline far away from the hotels of Kaanapali Beach and the condos of Napili Bay.
This exclusive gated residential condominium community features old-Hawaii-style cottage homes scattered over vast manicured grounds dotted with monkey pod trees, coconut palms, and mango orchards.
Many Alaeloa dwellings have been upgraded in recent years. There are no restaurants or shops onsite but there’s a community pavilion with a kitchen.
Take a dip in the oceanfront saline poo, bask in the sun on the seasonal crescent-shaped pebbly beach, or swim with the turtles in the bay. The reef break of Little Makaha is just a short swim away. If you book one of the oceanfront cottages, like the one linked here, then you can watch the whales frolic from your private lanai.
Every Alaeloa cottage allows only one short-term vacation rental per month so things never feel rushed. If slow travel is what you’re after, then Alaeloa is where to go.
