The most affordable Maui beach hotels and the budget hotels near Kahului Airport simply lack the luster that one associates with a Maui vacation. The same goes for camping in Maui. It’s just not my style and, since you ended up on my site, probably not yours either.

Where to stay in Maui on a budget?

The most obvious cheap places to stay in Maui are Kihei, Maalaea, the Napili-Honokowai community, and Wailuku. But that doesn’t mean that you won’t find any affordable accommodations outside of these areas.

Here’s an overview of all places to stay in Maui ranked by affordability. If you’re not familiar with the lay of the island, then have a look at the interactive map of Maui that I created.

Cheapest places to stay in Maui: Maalaea & Wailuku

Despite the fact that it’s super centrally located, Maalaea is often overlooked by visitors. I believe it’s mostly a case of unknown makes unloved. But this under-the-radar town between West and South Maui is home to some wonderful condo resorts. As a result, Maalaea makes for a wonderful place to stay in Maui on a budget.

Central Maui comprises Kahului airport and charming Wailuku town. Since these areas are located a bit further from the popular resort areas, you have a good chance of finding cheap Maui hotels and budget accommodations in this area. It’s also home to two of the most affordable hotels in Maui: the Maui Beach Hotel and the Maui Seaside Hotel.

Widest offer in budget accommodation in West Maui: Napili-Honokowai & Kahana

This West Maui community is mostly overshadowed by the popular resort towns of Kaanapali Beach and Kapalua. But make no mistake, the Napili coastline is very beautiful in its own right and dotted with various affordable condo resorts.

Widest offer in budget accommodation in South Maui: Kihei

This South Maui town is the number one destination for Maui condo rentals, making it one of the best places to stay in Maui on a budget. No other Maui area has a higher concentration of condominium resorts on the island. Discover my selection of condo rentals in Kihei.

Alternative options for cheap stays in Maui: North Shore and Road to Hana

Paia and Haiku in North Shore Maui are upcoming travel destinations. Then again, you can still find affordable accommodation options in this Maui area. It’s a popular hangout for surfers and you can find some of the best hostels in Maui here too.

East Maui, in particular the Hana area, is home to various cheap places to stay. You’ll find anything from farmhouses to cozy cottages. The only thing is that most of these affordable accommodations are pretty outdated. The places to stay in Hana that do offer modern-day comfort are rare to find and therefore considerably more expensive.

How to vacation in Maui on a budget FAQ

Maui’s high season coincides with school breaks and summer holidays. As a result, the cheapest time to visit Maui is when school is in session.

The second half of April, May, and early June are the most affordable times to visit during the spring season.
September, October, and November are the most affordable times to visit during the fall season.

So, if your planning allows it, this is the time of year to aim for. Unfortunately, this means that, for families, there’s no best time to visit Maui on the cheap.

By the way, if you travel in winter, then the northernmost part of West Maui – the area around Napili and Kapalua – as well as North Shore Maui may not be the best places to stay regardless of budget. The weather tends to be cloudier and rainier here in winter than in South Maui.

Choosing a vacation rental over a hotel is your best bet to secure cheap accommodation in Maui.

Vacation rentals come with kitchens allowing you to cook your own meals. And since food is a big expense in Hawaii, this can definitely make a difference.

Some vacation rentals also include parking. In hotels, parking will always be charged extra (either as a separate cost or as part of the resort fee).

Here are some things you can do to keep your Maui budget in check:

Travel off-season, when school’s in session.
Choose a vacation rental over a resort. Vacation rentals come with kitchens allowing you to cook your own meals.
Prepare your own breakfast and lunch and only go out for dinner at night. And why not make it a quick meal from one of the Maui food trucks now and then?
Look up happy hours near your Maui accommodation.
Determine whether you need your rental car every single day of your vacation. It’s often cheaper to book a car for your days of exploration only.
Check whether your vacation rental comes with parking.
Organize most activities in your Maui itinerary on your own. All beaches have public access, plenty of hiking trails and waterfalls are within easy reach, Haleakala National Park and the Maui State Parks are not that expensive, there are several off-the-beach snorkeling sites, and the most amazing sunrises and sunsets come free.

What to look for in budget accommodation in Maui largely depends on your preferences.

Do you value a washer and dryer in your rental or can those be part of the communal facilities? Is parking a non-negotiable for you?

Space, for one: The cheapest accommodations in Maui for couples are often studios. If you’re traveling with kids, then they’ll probably be sharing a sofa bed or Murphy bed instead of having their own bedroom.
The view may be another compromise. Some condos in my selection overlook the resort’s garden or the hinterland. Beach condos in Maui usually don’t fall within the low-budget category.
Air conditioning is a huge bonus and almost a necessity in my book. However, the cheapest Maui accommodations might not always come with this amenity.
